grape (grap),n. derived from an Old French word "grape," meaning "bunch" or "cluster"; also a kind of hook used to harvest grapes. Compare to the English word "grapple."

Spanish explorers brought an Old World species of grape called Vitis Vinifera to the new World. This species was first planted in California in 1769 by Franciscan friars, also from Spain.

The harvest for fresh grapes is from May through February. California produces nearly all the fresh grapes grown in the United States.
