Phytonutrients

What are Phytonutrients?

Phytonutrients are biologically active substances that give plants their odor, color, and flavor. Phytonutrients contribute to a plant's self-defense by protecting it from pests, viruses, bacteria, and excessive sunlight. Research indicates that phytonutrients may also protect the human body from heart disease and certain cancers. There are hundreds, probably thousands, of phytonutrients in fruits, vegetables, grains, and some herbs.

Phytonutrients and Grapes

Grape phytonutrients help protect cells from free radical damage, lending them a reputation for disease-fighting properties. Grape phytonutrients have been shown to combat heart disease and many cancers, including breast, colon, stomach, oral, and leukemia. Studies have also shown positive effects in combating flu virus as well as a host of age-related illnesses including Alzheimers and Parkinson's disease.

One of the most powerful phytonutrients called resveratrol is an antioxident found almost exclusively in the skins of green, red, and purple grapes. Loaded with resveratrol, grapes are gaining renown for their demonstrated positive impact on cell health and longevity.
